About:Arch Linux is an i686-optimized Linux distribution. It is lightweightand contains the latest stable versions of software. Packages are in.tar.gz format and are tracked by a package manager that is designedto allow easy package upgrades. Arch is quite streamlined compared tosome other distributions. Things that are relatively unused are notkept (info pages, for example). A default Arch install leaves you witha solid base; from there, you can add packages to create the custominstallation you’re looking for. Arch has a package build system thatallows you to easily create your own packages, which makes it veryeasy to rebuild a package with your own custom configuration. Archalso aims to use the newer features available to Linux users, such asreiserfs/ext3 and devfs.

One of the more popular uses for Linux is as a router/firewall to secure a local area network (LAN) against intruders and share an Internet connection. Several specialized distributions have sprung up to simplify this task. These range from small, diskette-based distros like the Linux Router Projectand FREESCO to larger systems requiring a hard disk installation. Among the latter is Astaro Corp.’s Astaro Security Linux (ASL) 5.1, which I recently reviewed as part of ongoing research into content filtering products. ASL is an RPM-based distribution that allows an administrator to easily turn an x86 PC or server into a router/firewall appliance.

When it comes to security tools, I like easy. I mean, compiling and installing tools from source code is fun, but it always seems like you don?t have the time to have fun when you need the tools the most. So when I learned about the Auditor ISO image, I downloaded it and gave it a whirl.
[ More! ]
To get started, download the latest image of Auditor and burn it as a bootable image. Remember to use the image option -- just copying the file will not produce a bootable image. After you have successfully written the image to disc, you can start Auditor directly from the CD. It will not install any permanent software on the hard disk unless you request it to, so don’t be nervous to use Auditor on a client workstation.
[ More! ]
There are far too many applications included with Auditor to go into each one individually. The CD includes several classes of applications, found on the KDE menu in the "Auditor" menu. The menu classes include "Footprinting," "Scanning," "Analyzer," "Spoofing," "Bruteforce," "Forensics" and "Password cracker." Suffice it to say that Auditor includes a comprehensive list of tools for any user who needs to perform a security audit.

We offer high-bandwidth downloads of the most popular Linux distributions from our servers located in Silicon Valley, CA, USA. Our servers are connected to the internet via multiple Gigabit ethernet links. Our paid download servers offer uncapped speeds of upto 100Mbps per user. By charging a nominal fee for the bandwidth we are able to maintain enough capacity to provide the highest possible download speeds to each user. Thus, your download speed is effectively limited only by your connection to your internet (or your ISP). We have enough server and bandwidth capacity to support hundreds of simultaneous paid downloads at typical cable modem speeds (5Mbps).

As it suggests, it is as easy as Debian. This website is aimed at providing simple and easy help, tips and tricks and valuable support articles to Debian user community ranging from beginners to Experts. About Linux Linux is a free Unix-type operating system originally created by Linus Torvalds with the assistance of developers around the world. Developed under the GNU General Public License, the source code for Linux is freely available to everyone. Structure of Linux The Structure of Linux has four main components as follows: The Linux kernel The File-system organization The multi-user concept The GUI system A brief history of Debian Linux Debian was founded in 1993 by Ian Murdock, then a student at Purdue University, who wrote the Debian Manifesto which called for the creation of a Linux distribution to be maintained in an open manner, in the spirit of Linux and GNU. He chose the name by combining the first name of his then-girlfriend (now wife) Debra with his own first name "Ian", forming the portmanteau "Debian", pronounced as debian (deb-e′-en). The Debian Project grew slowly at first and released its first 0.9x versions in 1994 and 1995. The first ports to other architectures were begun in 1995, and the first 1.x version of Debian was released in 1996. In 1996, Bruce Perens replaced Ian Murdock as the project leader. At the suggestion of fellow developer Ean Schuessler, he guided the editing process of the Debian Social Contract and the Debian Free Software Guidelines, defining fundamental commitments for the development of the distribution. He also initiated the creation of the legal umbrella organization Software in the Public Interest. Bruce Perens left in 1998 before the release of the first glibc-based Debian, 2.0. The Project proceeded to elect new leaders and made two more 2.x releases, each including more ports and more packages. APT was deployed during this time and the first port to a non-Linux kernel, Debian GNU/Hurd, was started as well. The first Linux distributions based on Debian, Corel Linux and Stormix’s Storm Linux, were started in 1999. Though no longer developed, these distributions were the first of many distributions based on Debian. In late 2000, the Project made major changes to archive and release management, reorganizing software archive processes with new "package pools" and creating a testing branch as an ongoing, relatively stable staging area for the next release. In 2001, developers began holding an annual conference called Debconf with talks and workshops for developers and technical users. Debian Releases The sweet part of the releases is that the names are all derived from the movie "Toy Story" by Pixar. Sounds kiddish isn’t? But, we love it!!! Debian suits perfectly for use as a gateway for computers on your LAN. However once bandwidth usage grows it could be handy to just add another internet uplink to your gateway. Debian does not cater for this out of the box so this document describes how to setup your debian gateway for multiple uplinks.

I want to study Computer Sciences beginning with the winter semester this year. But where should I do that? I live in Southern Germany, near Strasbourg. So my primary choice was Freiburg. I went there to check it out, but all they had to offer to interested pupils was a two hours lecture about programming sets in Java. Hey, every other computing faculty says that it’s not that important to know specific programming languages. Additionally I would rather put an accent on functional programming languages than on traditional ones. So Freiburg is most likely not my choice.

Backports are recompiled packages from testing (mostly) and unstable
(in a few cases only, e.g. security updates), so they will run without new
libraries (wherever it is possible) on a stable Debian distribution. I
recommend you to pick out single backports which fits your needs, and not
to use all backports available here.

Please stop mailing me about the "broken" or "missing" /pending/ directory on

It’s done, backports.org switched to
sarge. Thanks to Joerg Jaspert, dak is up
and running, and Debian developers can upload their own backports. Please see
the details
for developers I wrote to our mailinglist. If you just want to use some
packages, take a look at the
instructions
for users from the website. There are still some parts missing, e.g. the
website needs some updates, we need a wanna-build, buildds and new mirrors. I hope we’ll find time for those next weekend.
There’s also an IRC channel for interested developers/users on
OFTC called #debian-backports. The old archive with woody backports is
still available, but no longer supported.

Update: If you’re currently running a mirror, please wait for a blog entry from Joerg
on Planet Debian,
we’re switching to push mirroring next weekend.

Rene Engelhard, one of Debians
openoffice.org maintainers,
built a backport of openoffice.org 2.0.0-2 for sarge. It’s available from
here, and of
course you can install it using apt, just add this line to your sources.list:
/>
deb http://www.backports.org/pending/openoffice.org/ ./
/>
Speaking of backports for sarge... Joerg Jaspert
continued his work on
the dak setup for backports.org, I’m confident that it’s finished soon, so
Debian developers can upload their own packages to backports.org.

Update: The above sources.list line no longer works! Please see the
newer news entries!
