2007-02-18 Distribution Release: Lunar Linux 1.6.1

Auke Kok has announced the release of Lunar Linux 1.6.1, a source-based distribution designed for advanced Linux users: "With great pleasure we release ’Moose Drool’, also known as the Lunar Linux 1.6.1 Installer ISO, to the public. This ISO is partially a refreshed installer for i686, but it is also our first stable ISO for x86_64. The x86_64 installer ISO thus marks the true final entry for Lunar Linux as a multi-arch distro. This ISO comes with GCC 3.4.6, glibc 2.3.6, Linux 2.6.20, Perl 5.8.8, and other rock solid base components. Although the x86_64 ISO is purely 64-bit only now, we’re working to enable multilib, so stay focused for more news on that. This will also be the last ISO with GCC 3.x. Future ISOs will move to GCC 4.x and an updated glibc." Here is the brief release announcement. Download from here: lunar-1.6.1-i686.iso.bz2 (257MB, MD5), lunar-1.6.1-x86_64.iso.bz2 (260MB, MD5).

2007-01-14 Development Release: Lunar Linux 1.6.1 RC2

Auke Kok has announced the availability of Lunar Linux 1.6.1 RC2 installation CD images: "With great pleasure we release ’Moose Drool’, also known as the Lunar-Linux 1.6.1-rc2 Installer ISO. This is the first production-ready ISO release that installs both on x86_64 and i686, which gets us ready for our final 1.6.1 release on 2 architectures. This ISO comes with GCC 3.4.6, glibc 2.3.6, linux 2.6.19.2, Perl 5.8.8, and other rock solid base components. The new kernel means better PATA and SATA support. Updated discover allows better hardware recognition, and smooth installation on non-common hardware. The x86_64 version is pure 64-bit and thus does not provide GRUB as a boot loader." More details in the release announcement. Download: lunar-1.6.1-rc2-i686.iso.bz2 (243MB, MD5), lunar-1.6.1-rc2-x86_64.iso.bz2 (246MB, MD5).

2006-11-14 Development Release: Lunar Linux 1.6.1 RC1

Auke Kok has announced the first release candidate for Lunar Linux 1.6.1, a source-based distribution originally forked from Sorcerer: "I’m glad to release 1.6.1rc1-i686 for general testing into the Lunar community. This ISO is an incremental update to 1.6.0 and features full updated packages, including kernel 2.6.18.2. This ISO is meant as a refresher for newer systems and new installs, reducing the time to get those updated to the latest packages and providing support for newer systems that require a more recent kernel for hardware support. The ISO has the same size and packages as the 1.6.0 one. -mm, -prepatch and -rc kernels were removed altogether from the build code, as they are too out-of-date for the general user." 2006-04-07 Distribution Release: Lunar Linux 1.6.0

After over half a year of work on their first 2.6.x kernel based ISO series, the developers of the source-based Lunar Linux released their 1.6.0-i686 Installer ISO, codename "Indium Antimonide", to the public: "This is a major step forward from the 1.5.x series releases, adding a lot of features to Lunar-Linux installs, such as SELINUX, NPTL threads, udev, and more 2.6-kernel related improvements to the Linux OS. This release also adds the user-friendly installer and refines it greatly. It adds better hardware recognition and module loading options, an easier way to setup compilers against kernel sources and headers, and easier compiler optimisation management with a completely pluggable package management tool. The installer is now also capable of installing and initialising software RAID." Read the complete release announcement. Download: lunar-1.6.0-i686.iso.bz2 (254MB, MD5). Also available via BitTorrent.

2006-02-10 Development Release: Lunar Linux 1.6.0 RC3

The third release candidate of the source-based Lunar Linux distribution is now available for testing: "Here is the third release candidate for the final 1.6.0-i686 series installation ISO. As with rc1 and rc2, this is a testing release and approaches the quality we are looking for in the -final release. A lot of small bugs in rc1 and rc2 have been addressed making this an extremely useful release. This release has several feature enhancements over rc1 and rc2. The most noticeable is the Linux Software RAID tool that allows you to install Lunar on Software RAID easily. Precompiled SELINUX enhanced kernels can now be installed, and the server-targeted kernels should have better IO performance. The installer now uses normal console logins and fully enabled shells." 2006-01-26 Development Release: Lunar Linux 1.6.0 RC2

The the second release candidate of the source-based Lunar Linux 1.6.0 is ready for testing: "Here is the second release candidate for the final 1.6.0-i686 series ISO. As with rc1, this is a testing release and approaches the quality we are looking for in the -final release. A lot of small bugs in rc1 have been addressed making this an extremely useful release. Specifically, this release backs up all packages to the installed system for recovery purposes. Dmidecode was added to aid hardware discovery - it shows a ton of handy output on your system’s hardware. Ethtool was added as well. The grsecurity kernels now actually are correctly built." More details can be found in the release announcement. Download: lunar-1.6.0-i686-rc2.iso.bz2 (255MB, MD5).
