2006-11-04 BSD Release: NetBSD 3.1

NetBSD 3.1 has been released: "The NetBSD Project is pleased to announce that version 3.1 of the NetBSD operating system is now available in both source and binary form. NetBSD is a general-purpose Open Source operating system that provides interfaces for running a wide range of applications on a big number of different hardware platforms, all from one source tree. NetBSD 3.1 contains many bug fixes, security updates, new drivers and new features like support for Xen3 DomU." Read the rest of the release announcement for a detailed list of changes and new features. Download (MD5): i386cd-3.1.iso (208MB), amd64cd-3.1.iso (151MB). The CD images for a large number of processor architectures are also available for download via BitTorrent. On a related note, NetBSD 3.0.2, an updated version of the NetBSD 3.0 branch, is also out.

2006-10-12 Development Release: NetBSD 3.1 RC4

Geert Hendrickx has announced that the fourth release candidate of NetBSD 3.1 is ready for testing: "We had become aware of a few OpenSSL vulnerabilities which we didn’t want to leave unfixed in the NetBSD 3.1 release, hence we’ve extended the release cycle with a fourth release candidate. Binaries and ISOs for NetBSD 3.1_RC4 are available on the releng FTP mirrors. Apart from the OpenSSL fixes, we took advantage of this extra release candidate to add some more improvements: MS DOS file system: write performance of large files has been improved; toolchain: NetBSD 3.1_RC4 can be cross-built from NetBSD 4.0_BETA and -current (GCC 4.x); daily security report for /etc/exports has been improved; dhclient(8) exits gracefully if another instance is already running...." 2006-09-18 Development Release: NetBSD 3.1 RC3

The third release candidate of NetBSD 3.1 is ready for testing: "It is my pleasure to announce that the third release candidate for NetBSD 3.1 has been released. Improvements since the second release candidate include: fixed recent security issues with BIND, OpenSSL and X11 font handling; added ’xm shutdown’ support for Xen3 domUs; honor the user’s umask when creating UNIX domain sockets; fixed some Xen timing and clock issues; fixed serial console on the second serial port of sparc64 machines; fixed DHCP in sysinst on 64-bit archs. We anticipate this to be the final release candidate for the NetBSD 3.1 release, so, if no serious problems arise, we expect NetBSD 3.1 to be released on October 2."
