2006-08-11 Development Release: openSUSE 10.2 Alpha 3
Andreas Jaeger has announced the third alpha release of openSUSE 10.2, a product formerly known as SUSE Linux: "I’m glad to announce the third alpha release of our 10.2 product. Compared with Alpha2, we’ve made a number of significant changes: we switched to kernel 2.6.18rc4; openSUSE 10.2 contains KDE 3.5.4; we started the switch to GNOME 2.16 beta and have now the base packages in; the new branding ’openSUSE’ is shown in places but there’s still some existing ’SUSE Linux’ 10.1 branding; X11 R7.1 with different paths (no more /usr/X11R6 for the X.Org packages)." Read the rest of the release announcement for more details. As always, the ISO images are available from the project’s main server, mirrors or via BitTorrent; here is a quick link to the x86 torrent file: openSUSE-10.2-Alpha3-i386 (3,303MB).

2006-07-13 Development Release: SUSE Linux 10.2 Alpha 2
Andreas Jaeger has announced the release of the second alpha build of SUSE Linux 10.2, together with the decision to rename SUSE Linux to openSUSE: "We’re glad to announce SUSE Linux 10.2, code name ’Basilisk Lizard’ Alpha2. It’s downloadable from today on and will be the last community / consumer distribution called SUSE Linux. We’ll rename SUSE Linux to openSUSE. We’ll implement the first name change in Alpha 3 and will have a fully renamed distribution with Beta 1 in November." Read the full release announcement for the reasons and other information. SUSE Linux 10.2 Alpha 2 is available for download from a number of mirror sites and also via BitTorrent; here is a quick link to the x86 torrent file: SUSE-Linux-10.2-Alpha2-i386 (3,298MB).

2006-06-14 Development Release: SUSE Linux 10.2 Alpha 1
The development of SUSE Linux 10.2 is now officially underway with the release of the first alpha build: "SUSE Linux 10.2 Alpha 1 is available. It has one major problem, but apart from that it is highly usable. The installation using the GUI interface does not work, please select ’Text Mode’ when booting from CD media. Download of release notes does fail (server side issue). The difference to SUSE Linux 10.1 is mainly in version updates in some areas (especially the YaST package manager and KDE). Have a lot of fun!" Read the rest of the release announcement for further details and download links. The 5-CD ISO image sets for the three supported architectures are available from these SUSE Linux mirrors and also via BitTorrent; here is a quick link to the i386 torrent file: SUSE-Linux-10.2-Alpha1-i386 (3,283MB).

The Live DVD edition, which includes both GNOME and KDE desktop environments, is not installable to hard disk, but can be used to test hardware compatibility, perform system rescue tasks or evaluate SUSE Linux 10.1. As usual, we ship all the latest open source packages available at the time. We want to give special mention to Xgl for 3D acceleration on the desktop, NetworkManager for getting painless WiFi access everywhere, the completely open source AppArmor 2.0, and the full integration of Xen 3 in YaST." Read the rest of the release announcement for further details. At present only the 5-CD sets (and one add-on CD containing non-free software) for three architectures are available for download, with the installation DVD and live DVD expected a week from now. 2006-04-28 Development Release: SUSE Linux 10.1 RC3
Andreas Jaeger has announced the third release candidate of SUSE Linux 10.1: "I’m glad to announce SUSE Linux 10.1, code name ’Agama Lizard’ RC3. We have fixed the majority of bugs from RC2 and look forward to the gold master - if testing does not show serious problems. During the RC phase, we only provide delta ISOs of the media and update the factory tree as well. Note that the factory tree is not synced out right now, it is two days old. It will be updated by tomorrow." See the release announcement for further details and download links. The delta ISO images to build SUSE Linux 10.1 RC3 from both RC1 and RC2 are available for download from a number of FTP/HTTP mirrors or via BitTorrent.
